Search for the Dean of the Graduate School–New Brunswick
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, invites nominations and applications for the position of dean of the Graduate School–New Brunswick. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, Rutgers is a member of the American Association of Universities and one of the nation’s leading research universities, with an international reputation for excellence. The university is a vibrant and diverse community of 50,000 students and approximately 9,000 faculty and staff. Rutgers comprises 27 degree-granting undergraduate, graduate, and professional schools, as well as over 180 specialized research institutes. The university is at the vanguard of global research in the humanities, arts, and sciences, and in applied areas including health care, alternative energy, transportation, advanced materials, telecommunications, and management and labor relations. Rutgers received over $297 million in external funding last year. New Jersey has the second highest family income in the United States, ranks among the top 10 states in graduate and undergraduate degrees per capita, and has become a center for biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and information technology in the globalizing world economy.

The university seeks a distinguished scholar and executive whose visionary leadership will promote educational and research excellence. Located at the Rutgers flagship campus, the Graduate School–New Brunswick (see http://gsnb.rutgers.edu/index.php3 for detailed information) presides over M.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degree programs in 62 fields of study in the arts and sciences, engineering, environment, and several other professional areas. The school’s graduate programs are among the best in the country, with 8 ranked among the top 20 nationally.

As the senior academic and administrative officer of the Graduate School–New Brunswick, the dean will provide strategic leadership for the school to maintain and enhance the stature of its programs and to meet new demands. Working closely with the vice president for research and graduate and professional education, the executive vice president for academic affairs, and other university executives and leaders, the dean will play a key intellectual role in developing strong academic programs and in fostering growth and excellence in interdisciplinary and interinstitutional collaborations, such as its joint doctoral programs with the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and its membership in the Interuniversity Doctoral Consortium, which includes all the major doctoral-granting institutions in the New York metropolitan region.

The dean will also lead efforts to increase the size and diversity of the graduate student population and facilitate the growth of graduate education. Other responsibilities include overseeing the assessment of program quality, collecting data on graduate education and promoting the adoption of best practices, monitoring and improving graduate students’ working conditions, fostering programs to increase the financial support available to students, promoting students’ well-being and long-term success, and in other ways promoting excellence in the educational experience of students enrolled in the Graduate School–New Brunswick. A dozen full-time staff members support the graduate dean’s mission, and additional support is provided by the Office of Graduate and Professional Admissions.

The dean will also serve as a spokesperson for graduate education in state, national, and international forums. With external funding being of critical importance for higher education, the dean will lead efforts to augment the Graduate School–New Brunswick’s resources by seeking, and encouraging faculty and graduate students to seek, funding from individual, corporate, foundation, and government sources.

Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess a doctoral degree and a record of scholarly accomplishments warranting appointment at the rank of full professor in one of the fields encompassed by the Graduate School–New Brunswick. He or she will have the administrative experience and acumen necessary to play a leadership role in a large and complex university. He or she will demonstrate a strong understanding of and commitment to excellence in graduate education, teaching, and research. He or she will be articulate and have demonstrated the ability to build consensus around a strategic vision, as well as implement policies and initiatives to achieve that vision. He or she will have the ability to build effective working relationships with peers from a wide variety of backgrounds; effective collaboration with the deans of the 10 New Brunswick schools that offer graduate programs will be essential. Commitment to diversity in all aspects of university life, aptitude and enthusiasm for fundraising and outreach, and strong fiscal and business management skills are all essential.
