Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, invites nominations and applications for the position of executive dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in New Brunswick. Chartered in 1766 as Queen’s College, Rutgers is one of the nation’s leading research universities, with an international reputation for excellence. A member of the Association of American Universities (AAU), the university is a vibrant and diverse community of 50,000 students and approximately 10,000 faculty and staff. Rutgers comprises 27 degree-granting undergraduate colleges and graduate and professional schools, as well as over 180 specialized research institutes. The university is at the vanguard of global research in areas such as health care, alternative energy, transportation, and telecommunications, and received over $297 million in external funding last year.
The university seeks a distinguished scholar and executive whose visionary leadership will foster educational and research excellence at the Rutgers flagship New Brunswick Campus. Created in 2006 through the consolidation of four separate undergraduate colleges and their merger with the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the School of Arts and Sciences is the university’s leading and largest academic unit, supporting teaching, research, and service in the humanities, social sciences, biological/life sciences, and physical and mathematical sciences. With a full-time faculty of over 800, the school has approximately 20,000 students. Providing 75 percent of all undergraduate instruction on the New Brunswick Campus, the school is at the forefront of a major initiative to transform undergraduate education at Rutgers. The school’s graduate programs are among the best in the country, with eight ranked among the top 20 nationally.
As the senior academic and administrative officer of the School of Arts and Sciences, the executive dean will provide strategic and inspired leadership for the school as its international eminence increases. Working closely with the executive vice president for academic affairs, other university executives, and senior leaders across the New Brunswick Campus, the executive dean will play a key intellectual leadership role in developing strong academic and research programs; fostering growth and excellence in interdisciplinary collaborations; and ensuring that the needs of both undergraduate and graduate students are met effectively. The executive dean will recruit and nurture a generation of faculty who will enhance the school’s future development. Serving in a time of increasingly limited public funding for higher education, the executive dean will lead efforts to augment and leverage the school’s resources strategically The executive dean will also serve as spokesperson for the arts and sciences in state, national, and international forums.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. and a record of scholarly accomplishments warranting appointment at the rank of full professor within the School of Arts and Sciences, and the administrative experience and acumen necessary to lead a large and complex academic organization. He or she will demonstrate a strong understanding of and commitment to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education, teaching, and research in the arts and sciences. The capacity to articulate and build consensus around a strategic vision, as well as to implement policies and initiatives to achieve that vision, is critical. Commitment to diversity in all aspects of university life, aptitude and enthusiasm for fundraising and outreach, and strong fiscal and business management skills are also essential.
