


The director is the chief executive officer of the museum and reports directly to the university executive vice president for academic affairs. The director oversees an annual operating budget of approximately $3.6 million, heads a staff of 18 employees plus six graduate assistants, and works closely with the museum’s Board of Overseers. The incoming director will have the opportunity to appoint a new associate director and a new director of development (who serves as the museum’s liaison with the Rutgers Foundation, the fundraising arm of the university). Furthermore, the university is undertaking a $1 billion capital campaign in which the expansion of the Zimmerli Museum is a priority.

Qualifications
Rutgers seeks a dynamic director with a demonstrated ability to lead an art museum, to establish consensus while setting and achieving clear goals and priorities, and to build bridges with related constituencies. Although no specific degree is required, candidates should have the stature and academic background appropriate to the position. Candidates should have experience managing a large and complex arts institution, a record of realizing major projects, be versed in curatorial practices and educational programs, and be abreast of current developments in the field. Candidates should have demonstrated success with fundraising and be prepared to represent the Zimmerli in the university’s upcoming capital campaign.
The ideal candidate should be able to demonstrate a passionate commitment to the Zimmerli and Rutgers; communicate comfortably, effectively, and responsively with faculty, staff, fellow administrators, board members, students, and external constituents; show a willingness, ability, and demonstrated experience in making difficult and timely decisions; and show a commitment to enhancing the diversity of the museum’s staff and programs.
