Student
Services Initiative
October 2004 Update
Rutgers University will provide periodic updates on its progress in
improving student services, based on the recommendations of students
at retreats held on all campuses. The following list of improvements
in operations, accountability, communications, and safety is not meant
to be an exhaustive list but rather a representative sample of the changes
being implemented to this point.
Expanded service hours and one-stop operations
- All university offices have been asked to implement standard hours
of operation from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., including coverage during lunch.
- In Newark, the registrar, financial aid, student accounting services,
and the cashier are open until 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday throughout
the semester. The Athletic Center, Health Services, Stonesby Dining
Hall and the Robeson Campus Center have also extended their hours.
- In Camden, the cashier’s and registrar’s offices are
open until 7 p.m. the first two weeks of the semester. Financial aid
remains open until 6 p.m. from mid-August to mid-September.
- In New Brunswick/Piscataway, student accounting services, financial
aid, the cashier, registrar, parking, housing, dining and RU Connection
Card offices are open until 6 p.m. the first two weeks of each semester;
most of these offices also are open every Wednesday until 6 p.m. for
the first six weeks of the semester.
- On College Avenue, financial aid, student accounting services, the
cashier, dining, and the RUConnection Card are all available in one
permanent location in Records Hall. In addition, the registrar is available
in Records Hall during the first two weeks of classes and during the
drop/add and pre-registration periods each semester.
- On Cook/Douglass, the registrar, financial aid, student accounting
services and the cashier are all available under one roof in Waller
Hall during the first two weeks of classes. The registrar also is available
in Waller Hall during the drop/add and pre-registrations periods each
semester.
- On Cook/Douglass, RUConnection Card has added a permanent
office in the Post Office and Laundry (PAL) building.
- In New Brunswick/Piscataway, housing has added weekend housekeeping
and maintenance crews.
- Student post offices have extended weekend hours during the student
move-in period.
- My Classroom Needs,
a new online site, allows students and faculty to request classroom
repairs on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus. The site, overseen
by Facilities Operations and Services, is available evenings and weekends
as well as during normal business hours.
Improved accountability
- A full-time student ombudsperson is being established on the New
Brunswick/Piscataway campus. An advisory committee consisting
of faculty, students and staff members is being appointed to help shape
the parameters of the position and recommend ways to promote this new
service.
- Service personnel throughout the university are wearing nametags
so students can easily identify the person with whom they are speaking.
- Service providers have been asked to respond to inquiries within
24 hours.
- Many service employees have received enhanced training on standards
and behaviors.
- The President’s Recognition Program, including the annual Excellence
in Service and Rutgers University Bridge awards, has been instituted
to acknowledge exceptional contributions by Rutgers staff.
Enhanced communications
- An RUinfo Web
site was launched at the end of August to provide New Brunswick/ Piscataway
students with a handy online reference to such services as
cashiering, computing, housing, dining and parking. It also
provides frontline staff with immediate access to pertinent information.
Newark and Camden are also enhancing their student services Web sites.
- In New Brunswick/Piscataway, a wallet-sized RUinfo telephone survival
guide containing all important numbers has been distributed to students.
- myRutgers, the university
portal, provides students with a gateway to various online information
and services. Students can customize the portal based on their individual
needs.
- Newark has
established an Office of Commuter Services at the Robeson Campus
Center help desk to provide information specifically relevant to commuter
students.
Campus Safety Initiatives
- In New Brunswick, a Civilian Emergency Response Team composed of
students and staff is working closely with the police department.
- Community Service Officers are now patrolling the 5 th and 6 th Wards
in New Brunswick and providing bus route safety patrols. These officers
are also supplementing the police and security patrols on the Douglass
campus.
- In Camden, there are increased security patrols and faster shuttle
service.
- In Newark there is better lighting and increased security, including
community policing posts established at the New Street Plaza and Norman
Samuels Plaza and a Campus Student Officer Program
